Choosing your business type
BrandOps isn't one dashboard with everything switched on. It's a single app that reshapes its sidebar, dashboard widgets, and daily checklist around one setting: your brand's business type. This guide covers all six options and exactly which features each one unlocks.
ECOMMERCE: E-commerce / D2C
"Orders, fulfillment, influencers, social content." The most feature-dense business type, built for Instagram-first D2C brands.
- Sidebar-exclusive: Influencers, Influencer Campaigns, Orders, Fulfillment, Analytics, Reports. None of these appear for any other business type.
- Shared with Content/Media: Content Analytics and Instagram DMs.
- Shared with SaaS/Consulting/Freelance: Outreach Templates, Outreach Leads, and Outreach Sequences.
- Dashboard adds Influencer follow-ups to Today's Focus, plus a full Revenue & Orders section (weekly analytics and pending orders) and a Content & Reels section.
- Daily Ops defaults to Content, Influencer, Orders & Website, Amazon, and Communication task groups, plus a weekly review.
- The only business type with a niche picker (Skincare, Beauty & Makeup, Food & Beverages, and more) at onboarding.
SAAS: SaaS / Software
"Subscriptions, product content, support." Built around recurring revenue instead of physical orders.
- Sidebar-exclusive: Subscriptions, for tracking customers, plans, and MRR.
- Shares Outreach (Templates, Leads, Sequences) with Ecommerce, Consulting, and Freelance.
- Dashboard adds Subscription follow-ups to Today's Focus and a dedicated Revenue section showing MRR trend and churn: the equivalent of Ecommerce's Orders section, but for recurring revenue.
- Daily Ops defaults to Product & Content, Customer Success, Subscriptions, and Communication groups.
- Onboarding's step 3 asks for your first subscriber (customer name + optional plan) instead of a creator or client.
- The entity noun during onboarding is "product" rather than "brand," for example "Build your product identity."
CONSULTING: Consulting / Agency
"Clients, delivery work, pipeline." For agencies and consultancies billing for delivered work rather than shipping products.
- Sidebar-exclusive: Clients, Projects, Invoices. See the Clients, Projects & Invoicing guide for how billing types (Fixed, Hourly, Retainer) work inside Projects.
- Shares Outreach with Ecommerce, SaaS, and Freelance.
- Dashboard adds Client follow-ups to Today's Focus in place of Influencer or Subscription follow-ups.
- Daily Ops defaults to Content & Marketing, Client Work, Pipeline & Invoicing, and Communication groups, with log_hours and review_invoices as explicit daily tasks.
- The entity noun during onboarding is "company."
FREELANCE: Freelance
"Solo delivery work, utilisation." Shares its entire feature set with Consulting, sized for a team of one.
- Gets the exact same Clients, Projects, and Invoices sidebar items and the exact same client/project Daily Ops task groups as Consulting.
- The onboarding wizard and dashboard both treat CONSULTING and FREELANCE identically wherever business logic branches. The split exists for how the option reads to a solo operator, not for a functional difference.
- The entity noun during onboarding is "practice" (e.g. "Priya Sharma Design") instead of "company."
CONTENT_MEDIA: Content / Media
"Publishing, audience, content pipeline." For creators and publishers whose product is the content itself, without an order or client pipeline underneath it.
- Shares Content Analytics and Instagram DMs with Ecommerce, the only two sidebar items this type has in common with anything else.
- No Influencer CRM, no Clients/Projects/Invoices, no Subscriptions. None of the entity-specific onboarding step 3 flows apply, so onboarding skips straight from brand identity to your first task.
- Dashboard shows a Content Calendar and Reel Tracker section (shared with Ecommerce) but no Influencer/Client/Subscription follow-ups widget in Today's Focus, since there's no matching entity to follow up on.
- Daily Ops defaults to Content, Audience, and Communication groups.
OTHER: general task & content tracking
The catch-all for anything that doesn't fit the other five: a stripped-down version of BrandOps with only the universal features.
- No business-type-exclusive sidebar items at all. Just the shared core: dashboard, tasks, content pipeline, notifications, settings.
- Daily Ops defaults to a minimal Content, Follow-ups, and Communication set, the shortest default checklist of any business type.
- A safe fallback: if a brand's businessType can't be read for any reason, several parts of BrandOps (like the dashboard) default to treating it as ECOMMERCE rather than OTHER, so OTHER is a deliberate choice, not a silent default.
Frequently Asked Questions
What business types does BrandOps support?
Six: ECOMMERCE (E-commerce / D2C), SAAS (SaaS / Software), CONSULTING (Consulting / Agency), FREELANCE (Freelance), CONTENT_MEDIA (Content / Media), and OTHER (general task and content tracking).
Where do I change my business type?
Settings → Brand tab. A Business type selector sits at the top with a dropdown of all six options. Only Owners and Admins can change it (the field is disabled for everyone else, and for anyone while a save is in progress).
Does changing business type delete any data?
No. Switching only changes which sidebar links and dashboard widgets are shown. Existing Clients, Projects, Invoices, Subscriptions, Orders, or any other records you've created are never deleted by a business type change.
What's the actual difference between Consulting and Freelance?
Functionally almost nothing. Both unlock the same Clients, Projects, and Invoices sidebar items and run the same client/project-shaped Daily Ops checklist. They exist as separate options because a solo freelancer's pipeline reads differently from an agency's, not because the underlying features differ.
Why don't I see Orders or Fulfillment in my sidebar?
Orders and Fulfillment only appear for the ECOMMERCE business type. They're order-pipeline features with nothing equivalent for SaaS, Consulting, Freelance, or Content/Media, so they're hidden entirely rather than shown empty.
Which business types get Influencer Campaigns?
Influencers and Influencer Campaigns are ECOMMERCE-only. Content Analytics and Instagram DMs are shared between ECOMMERCE and CONTENT_MEDIA. Outreach (Templates, Leads, Sequences) is shared across ECOMMERCE, SAAS, CONSULTING, and FREELANCE.
Does my business type change what Daily Ops shows me?
Yes. A brand-new brand's Daily Ops checklist is auto-seeded from a default task list specific to its business type: Content & Influencer & Orders & Amazon groups for Ecommerce, Product & Customer Success & Subscriptions groups for SaaS, Client Work & Pipeline & Invoicing groups for Consulting/Freelance, and so on. It's fully editable afterward either way.
